Dr Muriel Newman is the founder and Director of the New Zealand Centre for Political Research.

Muriel, a Member of Parliament for ACT New Zealand from 1996-2005, has a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Auckland University and Doctorate in Mathematics Education from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.

Her early career was in the education field at secondary and tertiary level in NZ and the USA. She became involved in the agriculture sector while running the family farm and raising her children, later moving into retail to become the NZ Assistant General Manager for listed retailer Michael Hill Jeweller.

During that time, she was elected President of the Northland Chamber of Commerce, and was appointed to the Northland Area Health Board, the Northland Conservation Board and the Northland Business Development Board.

She has two graduate chidren, is the joint author with her husband, Frank, of several books about money management, holds a black belt in Kung Fu and lives at Rocky Bay Cove in Tutukaka, Whangarei.

The New Zealand Centre for Political Research is a web-based think tank that takes a research-based approach to public policy matters and encourages the free and open debate of political issues. 

Each week the NZCPR publishes a free newsletter, which is sent out to a mailing list of over 16,000 readers. The newsletter invites readers to visit the website to read the guest commentaries, take part in the weekly polls, and check out the hundreds of readers' comments which are posted on the website daily. 

But that is only a part of the NZCPR.com operation.

live news feeds from the Herald and Stuff (where links can also be found to most of New Zealand’s daily newspapers), the NZCPR.com homepage is a gateway into a wide range of resources for website visitors. Below is a summary of the different services offered on the site - please click the image and check out the sites. You might also want to make NZCPR.com your homepage or add it to your favourites for easy access.

NZCPR readers are encouraged to express their views, opinions and feedback - I look forward to hearing from anyone who would like to share their views on any topic...   The Letters to the Editor link takes website visitors to the site where letters can be submitted. Once received, letters are published on the NZCPR Debating Chamber Forum in the General Debate.

The NZCPR is funded by donations only. All donations are very welcome. In return for contributions, a number of Subscriber Services are provided which include unlimited access to the NZCPR Debating Chamber Forum. The NZCPR Weekly newsletter is free. This link takes vistors through to the mailing list page where addresses can be submitted.

One of the most popular sites on NZCPR.com is the NZCPR Debating Chamber forum. The forum is divided into key areas including the General Debate. This is the place for robust debate about public policy and political matters. It is also a noticeboard for interesting information posted by subscribers and sent in by visitors to NZCPR.com. This Parliament and Politics page provides information about Parliamentary activities and political developments. It includes live parliamentary and political news feeds, the link to What's on in Parliament, links to the websites of all Parliamentary Parties, and details of all Members of Parliament including their email addresses to provide easy public access.

What’s On In Parliament is a gateway to Parliament's website and to Parliamentary activities. It provides links to the live-streaming of Parliament direct into your computer, the daily Order Paper of Parliamentary business, details of bills and inquiries being considered by Select Committees for which public submissions have been called, and the entry into the knowledge basket of all of New Zealand's legislation.

The Government frequently calls for submissions on any number of issues from proposed Bills, to special reviews and inquiries and so on. A democracy flourishes when the public are well informed and freely express their opinion and share their wisdom. This Consultation website provides quick links to the agencies where full details of any consultation that's in progress can be found.

The Coffee Break webpage provides a selection of leading Think Tank and Opinion Websites for you to browse while you take a break with your coffee or tea.

This International Media page is to help keep you informed. You can listen live to the radio stations, read the newspapers and see what the TV channels have to offer by clicking the links. For those of you who have difficulties with radio reception, this may be the answer to your problems - select your channel, shrink the screen and you can listen while you work.

Research and articles of interest are regularly posted on this page. It also contains all of the links from the NZCPR Weekly newsletter references. 

The Soapbox Series is an opportunity for website visitors with a penchant for writing, to put down their thoughts – on any issue they feel passionate about. Opinion pieces should be around 500 words. Contributions can be made using the form found on the page.

The NZCPR Library is a password protected subscriber-only service available to those who donate to the NZCPR. This library provides a wealth of information organised into a readily accessible topic format for easy access. New material is added on a regular basis. 

NZCPR Research Panel is aimed at building a panel of 500 volunteers to assist decision-makers in shaping the future direction of public policy. While we are well on the way to achieving that goal, we are not there yet. If you would like to register, please visit the site and complete the form.
