I couldn't help thinking that they will - in the form of Winston Peters as he now seems to be back on the campaign trail!

But you also make a very good point that damn teachers should be there to teach kids about academic and taining issues not matters that are the domain of parents. Teachers should stick to their knitting and leave parents to theirs!

Hear Hear Rose.

It smacks of the Hitler Youth movement.

These people are plain dangerous and you can see what sort of damage their ideology is already doing every day and everywhere.

I hate to think what it's going to be like growing old in a country that has so damaged relations between parents and their kids in so undermining parental authority, underhandedly manipulating young minds.

I don't think that parental notification is nearly enough! How about parental PERMISSION???

And why should the schools (or government) be granted ANY opportunity to argue their case against parents in court in an attempt to prove the child is at extreme risk because the parents refuse the child the condoms, abortion, overly explicit sex education, homosexual indoctrination etc.

IT IS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!!!

Schools are there to educate our kids academically so they can grow up and get a decent job, not hijack the parents role of primary caregiver!!!

I just wonder if this is not so much about the welfare of the child but more about population control and the undermining of our civil rights!

I'm really not looking forward to old age at all, as I think the babyboomers generation are in for a very rude awakening. However there's still hope of course that the babyboomers Grey Power Movement will prove a far more formidable force in tackling these absurd pieces of legislation which are all geared for the minority but exclude the majority. Let's face it, we do have the numbers!

Perhaps Grey Power needs to run for the next election?

It's time we did away with the notion of 'in loco parentis' and make these idiots accountable to parents.

Who do you sue when the condom breaks and your kid is pregnant? Oh, that's right, they whisk her away for a termination so you don't find out.

Come to School Ball – Have Sex

Family First NZ is shocked that a Bay of Plenty high school handed out complementary condoms to every student when they purchased their ball tickets.

“Te Puke High School handed out gift bags which included a condom and advice on safe sex. The underlying message to students is that the ball is not about a fun social occasion with their peers but about an expected opportunity to have sex,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ. “That is a foolish and dangerous message to be sending.”

“The condoms which were passed out by the student organisers were provided by the school nurse without parental notification or permission. The school is undermining the role and supervision of parents.”

Family First says that this case highlights the problem with the current parental notification laws whereby a teenager can get contraceptives, vaccines, or an abortion without parental notification.

A recent poll found extensive support for parental notification when their daughter is pregnant and considering, or is being advised to have, an abortion.

In response to the question “Should the law require parents to always be informed before-hand if their daughter who is under 16 is pregnant and wants to have an abortion?” 79% responded yes, only 12% said no, and 9% either didn’t know or refused to answer.

“While a parent has to sign a letter for their child to go on a school trip to the zoo or to play in the netball team, they are totally excluded from any knowledge or granting of permission for that same child to be put on the pill, have a vaccine, or have an abortion,” says Mr McCoskrie.

Family First is asking for the law to be amended to allow for parental notification in all cases of medical advice, prescriptions and procedures unless it can be proved to a family court that it would place the child at extreme risk.

'Kiro must go for tagging stance'
By MICHAEL FOX - Stuff.co.nz | Thursday, 03 April 2008

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: Children's Commisioner Cindy Kiro's comments that graffiti can be seen as legitimate art has outraged the Sensible Sentencing trust.

The Sensible Sentencing Trust has accused Children's Commissioner Cindy Kiro of attempting to legitimise graffiti and tagging and called for her resignation.

Dr Kiro made the comments in a submission to the Law and Order Select Committee hearing submissions on the Summary Offences (Tagging and Graffiti Vandalism) amendment Bill.

"For some people, graffiti and tagging are seen as a legitimate art form," she said.

Justice watchdog the Sensible Sentencing Trust says the Commissioner's comments endorse vandalism and she should resign.

Trust spokesman Garth McVicar said he was absolutely staggered that someone with a responsibility for the protection and well-being of young people could make such an inflammatory statement.

"Dr Kiro has given every wannabe tagger and vandal permissions to commit crime, providing they say that it was an expression of their history or a legitimate art form," he said.

"Her comments are hugely provocative at a time when a decent hard-working citizen is facing a murder charge because of his frustration over this issue."

Mr McVicar cited increases in youth crime and claimed that graffiti and tagging were entry level crimes.

"The youth committing these violent crimes would have all started with graffiti and vandalism," he said.

A spokesperson for Dr Kiro declined to comment.

How on earth did she get the job?. I agree with all of your sentiments. I wonder how she would feel if her house was tagged. Does she have a house of her own? Maybe she rents. Obviously she is very unsuitable for the responsible position she holds. She has no idea about responsibility and accountability. Children's supposed rights in this field have been elevated way too far. If they can't be accountable, they shouldn't have rights.

Cindy Kiro has no idea regarding the reality here.

What does she mean by " There needs to be an appropriate balance between the rights of property owners and the rights of children and young people "

Young people have no rights what ever when it comes to private property and they certainly have no right to damage or tag other peoples property.

As for public spaces that Young people are alienated from,if they do exist I would suggest that there is good cause ,like the lack of respect for other people using such space and the damage caused by the action of some young people using it.

Kiro's appreciation of art is unusual to say the least, when she claims that graffiti and tagging are legitimate art forms.

I agree there is some Social commentry behind this so called art form and it represents a youth that is being encourage to break all the acceptable social norms and make demands on a society based on the Governments and the Kiro philosophy of youth rights.

Kiro: Tagging law does not need to change
Wednesday, 2 April 2008, 4:32 pm
Press Release: Commissioner For Children

Media Release For immediate release Wednesday 2 March 2008

Children's Commissioner says tagging law does not need to change

The law does not need to be amended to deal with the issue of tagging and graffiti, Children's Commissioner Dr Cindy Kiro said today.

In her Submission on the Summary Offences (Tagging and Graffiti Vandalism) Amendment Bill, Dr Kiro urged the Law and Order Committee considering the Bill to look for long-term, rather than short-term solutions.

"It is my submission that solutions must be broader than the punitive and restrictive measures that are the basis for this Bill," Dr Kiro said.

"Legislation is only one of the tools that should be used for managing tagging and graffiti and New Zealand has some of the most innovative legislative processes for addressing the care and protection needs and offending behaviours of children and young people. I believe these processes, as well as existing provisions within the summary Offences Act, are already in place to deal with this matter.

"I acknowledge that graffiti and tagging can have negative connotations and outcomes for some people however, complex problems such as this, are rarely solved by a simple or black and white response.

"For some people, graffiti and tagging are seen as legitimate art forms. There is history and social commentary behind these art forms.

"I am aware there is strong public opinions regarding the issue of graffiti and tagging and its impact on both public and private spaces. Interestingly, these public spaces are often environments that children and young people are alienated from. I believe that children and young people need to be included in decisions relating to the use of public spaces.

"Moving forward I believe solutions need to appropriately balance the rights of property owners and the rights of children and young people; re-direct anti-social behaviour with adequate support networks for children and young people; look for community-based solutions that suit that community; and enable children and young people to make successful transitions from adolescence to adulthood.

"I have heard from young people on the matter of tagging and graffiti and I believe their voices need to be heard and respected. Most young people in New Zealand are not engaged in vandalism or bad behaviour. They are in fact, leading healthy, normal lives and many of them are doing extraordinary things."

This just seems vindictive:

Father remanded on two child assault charges

New 11:39AM Tuesday February 12, 2008

A Christchurch father has been charged with assaults on his two sons, aged two and four years.
James Louis Mason, 49, did not have to make an appearance in Christchurch District Court today. He was remanded to February 26 to apply for legal aid.
Mason, a professional musician who appears on the charge sheets as unemployed, is charged with both assaults on the same day, December 19.
Mason complained publicly when police warned him about flicking his son on the ear. Police later reviewed the evidence and decided to charge him with assaulting the two boys.
