A problem which has come to our attention recently is when "links" don't work. This is almost certainly due to a JAVA problem. JAVA is found on most computers these days, but if you lose it or your computer security system blocks it, then your links probably won't work.

The best way to fix it is to download JAVA again - it can be downloaded free here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Good luck!

The newsletter no longer arriving (after spam filters or ISPs have been changed) is probably the most common query that I receive regarding the NZCPR Weekly newsletter. Here is the full response I send which should help you sort out the problem:

Quote:
Dear XXXX,

Thanks for your note about the fact you are no longer receiving the NZCPR newsletter – I am really sorry about that. I have checked the NZCPR mailing list and your address is certainly still there - you have never been removed.

That means that your computer security settings (or your ISP's) must be sending the newsletters to your SPAM folder – either the Spam folder on your desktop or the one on your Xtra webmail account. If the newsletters are in your desktop junk mail or spam folder, you will need to find a newsletter then, using the “Junk Mail” options, put the address on a “safe” or “this is not junk” list.

If you can’t find a newsletter on your desktop, you will need to log onto your webmail account (where you would go if you wanted to read your emails from an internet café). I’m not sure how other ISP’s organise theirs but our one has an EMAIL OPTIONS area with SPAM FILTER as one of the choices. If you go into that and into ADVANCED SETTINGS you will see that you have an EMAIL ADDRESS WHITELIST where you could add the newsletter address which is:
newman-weekly-bounces @ castor.igrin.co.nz

Having the newsletter address on your WHITELIST will ensure that you always get the newsletter.

While you are logged onto your webmail account it would be worth looking into your QUARANTINE SPAM folder to see if there are any other messages that you might want that are regularly being blocked. You could add those addresses to your whitelist as well.

If you have difficulty with this, phone your ISP – they should be able to help.

Good luck!

In the meantime, if you want to catch up with the newsletters you have missed you can see the latest dozen or so here: http://www.nzcpr.com/NewsletterArchive.htm

Kindest regards,
Muriel

Some readers are receiving error messages when they try to open links on the newsletter.

This may be because the NZCPR website runs JAVA scripts, and their computer security systems may be objecting to the JAVA programme.

Most computers come with JAVA, which is a free download, so if you don’t have it you might like to download and see if that sorts out the problem – see http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

This topic is for questions relating to the way the NZCPR Weekly newsletter can arrive in your INBOX with images stripped, the formatting jumbled and links not working.

It shouldn't be like that if you are using HTML as your email format. If you are using TEXT as your format there will, of course, be no images. To see how it should look, see http://www.nzcpr.com/NewsletterArchive.htm.

Below are some answers to queries I have received about such problems. I will post them all here along with the responses so that if you are having similar problems you may be able to see the solution.

To contact me about your problem, please email admin@nzcpr.com and put "Technical Query" in the subject line.

I hope you are able to sort out your problems and thanks for your interest in the NZCPR.

(1)BLOCKED MESSAGE WITH IMAGES AND FORMATTING STRIPPED

From H: I used to have no problem receiving your newsletter, now Trend Micro blocks it each week. I had changed nothing. I have now made my security filter 'Low' but it was still blocked. It's not the same reading it as a text file so I often don't.
Any ideas?

Muriel replies: Yes, this issue of blocked messages is very frustrating.

a) The best solution to sort out the problem is to add newman-weekly-bounces @ castor.igrin.co.nz (which is the actual address of the mail programme that sends out the weekly newsletter) to your mail system's white-list.

Unfortunately most people don’t even know that they have a white list as it is usually located on your ISPs website in your webmail account.

What I suggest you do is phone your ISP so they can help you sort this out for this newsletter because there will be other addresses that you will want to add once you know how to do it.

b) Other options include using the “Junk Mail” options to put the address on a “safe” or “this is not junk” list, or adding the address to your contacts, which should make it “safe”.

c) A final option is to click the link at the top of the newsletter and read it on the website at http://www.nzcpr.com/NewsletterArchive.htm.

2. IMAGES STRIPPED DUE TO AVG UPDATE

Some people are now having problems because they have installed the latest version of AVG Free virus scanner and it appears to be stripping images. Here are the instructions for dealing with that problem:

Open the AVG User Interface->click Tools->click Advanced settings...->click E-mail Scanner->uncheck Certify e-mail (for incoming and outgoing) and then save your changes.

(3) NEWSLETTER LINKS NOT WORKING

Gary is having a problem with newsletter links not working:

This can be caused by his computer setting blocking links or it may be that the computer doesn't have enough memory to be able to open the link.

If you can't figure out how to stop the computer blocking the links then what you can do is right click on the link you want to open and choose COPY HYPERLINK. Then open the internet browser and paste in the hyperlink that you have copied and press enter or refresh the page. The link should then be opened.

Alternately, view the newsletter in the Archive page where all the links will work - click here: http://www.nzcpr.com/NewsletterArchive.htm
