Wording of the petition:
The
petition of Dr Muriel Newman and others respectfully request that New
Zealand school children be protected from political indoctrination by
inserting into the Education Act provisions similar those found in
clause 406 of the British Education Act which forbids "the
promotion of partisan political views in the teaching of any subject in
the school" and clause 407 which requires that if political
matters are raised, children "are offered a balanced
presentation of opposing views".
|
Background
There is no safeguard in the New Zealand Education Act to protect
children from political indoctrination. In Britain such safeguards exist
and were recently used by a father, Stuart Dimmock, to prevent Al
Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" from being shown in
British schools without teachers presenting the other side of the
argument. This was to ensure that children are given a balanced view on the highly
political issue of Climate Change.
The Intent of the
Petition
This petition to Parliament seeks to introduce into our Education Act
similar safeguards to those that exist in the British Education Act.
With the new school curriculum containing some highly political material
New Zealand children deserve protection from political
indoctrination in a similar fashion to their British counterparts.

The article "Politics in Schools on Trial" looks at the
British High Court case taken by a father Stuart Dimmock to protect his
children against the political indoctrination in Al Gore's "An
Inconvenient Truth" by using a clause in the Education Act which
safeguards children from political indoctrination and concludes that New
Zealand school children have no such protection and are totally exposed
