| What
do you consider to be the most significant causal factors of
youth crime? On
a scale of 0 to 5, with 0 being of no significance and 5 being
very significant, family breakdown topped the poll of almost
1,000 respondents with an average rating of 4.6, school
truancy rated second on 3.1, inadequate policing was third on
2.8, poverty was fourth on 2.2, a lack of facilities for youth
was fifth on 2.1, and the economic reforms of the 1980s was
rated lowest with a score of 1.1.
Other
factors that were commonly identified as being of significance
were poor parenting, a lack of family values, and the Domestic
Purposes Benefit.
Poll
respondents clearly believe that family breakdown is four
times more significant as a causal factor in youth crime than
the economic reforms of the 1980s. This is in sharp contrast
to the viewpoint of the Green Party, which claimed last week
that a core factor contributing to youth crime was New
Zealand’s economic reforms.
