Any new constitution that enshrines the Treaty of Waitangi is a major threat to New Zealand’s democracy. It would permanently put power and privilege into the hands of the tribal elite – other New Zealanders would become second class citizens in their own land.

A new constitution would give un-elected Judges supreme power over our elected Members of Parliament.

All attempts to impose a race-based future on New Zealand – through a “written” constitution embracing the Treaty – should be strongly opposed.

Please sign the DECLARATION OF EQUALITY to reject outright race-based laws.

There is no need to change our constitution. A 2005 Parliamentary review found New Zealand’s constitution is working well.

Our constitution, like Britain’s, is based on a collection of statutes and conventions, such as the Human Rights Act, the Electoral Act, and the Cabinet Manual procedures for appointing the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Under our constitution Parliament is sovereign.

As it stands, our constitution is extremely flexible – abolishing the Maori seats, for example, is a simple process that requires the repeal of just a few clauses of the Electoral Act.

Those who seek to entrench iwi in a position of unassailable racial, legal, cultural and economic superiority over all other New Zealanders are attempting to change our constitution. But we must fight back and strongly resist any proposal for a new written constitution.

It is utterly out of the question that our constitution should recognise and enforce racial distinction. That would forever condemn our country to a future of racial division. If the Treaty gets into our constitution – in any way at all – that is what will happen.

If you feel strongly about this – and we believe that you should, and that most New Zealanders do – then we ask you to sign the DECLARATION OF EQUALITY, and get your family and friends to sign it also. We must stop the separatists entrenching their hold over our country. We must change New Zealand’s course. It is now or never.

We, New Zealanders of all backgrounds, having founded and developed our society in equality, fairness, and comradeship, oppose any laws which establish or promote racial distinction or division. There shall be one law for all:

  • We reject reference to the Treaty of Waitangi or its principles in any constitutional document.
  • We ask that such references be removed from all existing legislation.
  • We ask that race-based Parliamentary seats be abolished.
  • We ask that race-based representation on local bodies be abolished.
  • We ask that the Waitangi Tribunal, which has outlived any usefulness it may have had, be abolished.

Therefore in the interests of New Zealand we call on members of the Houses of Representatives to implement the principles of this Declaration of Equality to ensure there is one law for all.
